National Wattle Day: Garal Dreaming

in Aug 31, 2025

How Aboriginal Wattle Wisdom Connects Us to Country and Memory

The golden blooms of wattle paint our landscape each spring, announcing the arrival of National Wattle Day with their vibrant display. But for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, wattle—or garal in Wiradjuri—has been far more than Australia's national floral emblem. It's been sustenance, medicine, tool, and teacher for over 65,000 years.

Ancient Aboriginal Wisdom in Every Wattle Seed

Long before golden wattle became Australia's official symbol, our Ancestors understood its profound gifts. The wattleseed was ground into nutritious flour, providing essential protein and carbohydrates. The sweet nectar from golden flower clusters offered natural energy, whilst the inner bark yielded traditional Aboriginal medicine for healing.

From the sturdy wood came spears, shields, and boomerangs—tools that connected us to Country through hunt and ceremony. The gum that weeps from wattle bark served as nature's adhesive, binding not just materials but Communities through shared Indigenous plant knowledge.

When Chocolate Becomes Cultural Storytelling

I often create special release chocolates infused with garal (wattleseed) for our Chocolate On Purpose® collection. At a local market, a customer took her first taste and her eyes immediately filled with tears.

"This takes me straight back to Sunday barbecues with my grandad," she whispered.

We talked for nearly an hour, unraveling the mystery of her emotional response. It wasn't just the native Australian botanicals—it was the way wattleseed's nutty, coffee-like notes perfectly mimicked the hickory wood her grandfather used on his barbecue. That was the day I truly understood that our taste buds are as unique as our fingerprints.

The Ngunggilanha Connection: Preserving Traditional Knowledge

This is why our soon to be opened 'Ngunggilanha' Cultural Sensory Garden project feels so important for National Wattle Day activities. When Aboriginal women aged 45+ join our chocolate-making family, they'll bring their own taste memories—knowledge passed down through generations about which Australian native botanicals heal, nourish, and celebrate.

Honouring 65,000 Years of Wattle History

As we celebrate National Wattle Day Australia , let's remember that the golden wattle's significance extends far beyond its beauty. It represents resilience, survival, and the sophisticated Aboriginal plant knowledge systems that sustained Indigenous peoples across this continent.

When you see wattle blooming this spring, pause for a moment. Consider the hands that first ground its seeds, the voices that shared its secrets, the Communities that thrived because of its gifts. This is reconciliation you can taste—honouring the past whilst creating a future where Indigenous knowledge is valued, preserved, and celebrated.

Taste the Story of Traditional Wattle Uses

Our garal chocolate is more than just an imaginatively cute ingredient... think May Gibb's gorgeous illustrations... it's Cultural storytelling in edible form. Each piece connects you to 65,000 years of Aboriginal plant knowledge whilst supporting Indigenous growers and Communities.

Because when we honour traditional ingredients with respect and authenticity, we create more than chocolate. We create connection, understanding, and moments that transport us home—wherever home might be in our taste memories.
