The Gift of Yuyang

Yuyang - Black Cockatoo - Mother & Protector

With their massive, hook-tipped beaks capable of demolishing even the toughest bilawi (she-oak tree seed cones), Yuyang (the Wiradyuri name for the glossy black cockatoo with red tail) have long been seen by Australia's First People as providers of sustenance.

By following their movements and foraging patterns, Communities could reliably locate fresh plant foods during lean times, and this vital ecological role contributes to the glossy black's depiction as a symbolic ‘mother’ figure in many Dreamtime narratives.

In the Wiradyuri spirit of ngunggilanha (reciprocity) please enjoy these Indigenous Glossy Black Cockatoo Art Wallpapers by Gumbaynggirr, Bundjalung and Kalkadoon artist Fileisha Laurie, as shared by the World Wildlife Fund- Australia (WWF), which you can use as a Zoom or Teams background, or Wallpaper for desktop and mobile devices.

Fileisha has depicted the glossy black cockatoo in these artworks as Biliirrgan, the name for the glossy black cockatoo in Gumbaynggirr language. Her images capture Biliirrgan on Sky Country, which Australia's First People speak of as being connected with the sea, and in turn both are connected to the earth, there is no division.
